Hello – I’m Stephen Greer, a theatre academic and cultural critic based in Glasgow, Scotland. I’m the author of two books – Queer exceptions: solo performance in neoliberal times (MUP 2018) and Contemporary British Queer Performance (Palgrave 2012) – as well as a range of essays and articles about British and European theatre.
I most often write about live and experimental performance but have broad interests in the cultural politics of visual art, TV, film and video-games.
I can offer expert opinion on topics including sexuality and gender in performance, the economies of arts festivals (spoiler: often terrible for artists) and arts/cultural policy in Scotland. Get in touch if you think I can help. If you’re a research student looking for a supervisor, head over here.
In my most recent work, I’ve been exploring the contentious relationship between contemporary performance and the conditions of neoliberalism. My current project focuses on the history of Live Art in Scotland.
